Tech Gives Back is an annual day of community service that brings together SVB employees, clients and partners from around the world to give back to the communities in which we live, work and call home. In years past, it has been a chance to see & connect with each other in person, all the while employing a little elbow grease. However, this year we have adapted in the best way and will be holding virtual volunteering events around the world where you can volunteer ANYTIME, ANYWHERE and with ANYONE!
With the COVID-19 pandemic and recent events around equity and social justice rapidly and profoundly affecting communities around the world, service is needed now more than ever.

- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: Recognize healthcare heroes with a global show of thanks for being on the front lines of COVID-19. Volunteers will be matched with a local hospital to type a message (or multiple messages) of thanks. Volunteers may include photos of handmade cards along with their messages. E-cards and notes will be sent to Raised By Us via email and digitally distributed.

Reach Out and Read Colorado (RORCO) provides a proven early-literacy program to over 130,000 children from low-income families throughout the state of Colorado. RORCO is committed to reducing educational disparities and promoting equity among the most vulnerable members in Colorado. We provide equitable access to early literacy and books in over 30 languages for all children, no matter their socioeconomic status.
- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: To encourage family time and reading together we are asking members of our community to film themselves reading aloud and to share the video(s) with the national office for a nationwide video project, to be disseminated to the Reach Out and Read network in Colorado and across the country.

Missing Maps is a humanitarian project that preemptively maps parts of the world that are vulnerable to natural disasters, conflicts, and disease epidemics.

With the onset of COVID-19, Belle Haven wants to ensure that students remain safe and healthy and have opted for all students to start the year off with distance learning. This year presents many changes for students, including how they interact in their virtual classrooms, try their best to learn from home, and remain active and healthy without their usual physical education and recess activities. Students currently receive ONLY ONE physical education class a week, but volunteers can help students move and groove while at home to stay healthy and get them up off their seats while still learning.

- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: Volunteers will create videos of simple and dynamic exercises and warm-up routines that students can follow along at home.
Volunteers will be led by a HandsOn Bay Area Project Leader in a mandatory instructional session to create their own short video of an exercise or warm-up routine. No experience necessary, but we ask that you come with energy, spirit, and channeling your favorite workout instructor!
The Zooniverse is the world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research. This research is made possible by volunteers — more than a million people around the world who come together to assist professional researchers. Our goal is to enable research that would not be possible, or practical, otherwise.
SuitUp increases college and career awareness and preparedness for students in underserved communities through innovative business competitions.
- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: You'll participate in SuitUp's Hackathon, a 90-minute session where volunteers will work in teams of ~5-7 to solve a challenge associated with remote learning to help students across the country. Teams will have 60 minutes to develop a solution to a challenge (i.e. poor engagement, lack of technology, attendance issues, etc.) and will then pitch their ideas to a panel of judges from a local school. The judges are those impacted most by remote learning--5-10 students, teachers and administrators.The winning team's solution will be shared on SuitUp's social media channels and with their 200+ school partners.

- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: Participate in a unified virtual BINGO experience with Special Olympics athletes. Similar to what an in-person sporting activity would provide, this activity brings people with and without intellectual disabilities together to play a game and, by doing so, furthers the Special Olympics mission of fostering understanding, inclusion and acceptance.This activity includes a Q&A with the athletes.
Access to enough food should be a basic right. Unfortunately, this is not the reality for millions of people in Los Angeles County. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 1.4 million people in Los Angeles County faced food insecurity. Food insecurity is inconsistent without access to cheap and nutritious food. Los Angeles has the highest percentage of food insecurity in the nation. The primary goal of Food Oasis is to provide up-to-date information to Angelinos and to build a directory that connects anyone with hundreds of free food resources.
Upwardly Global’s mission is to eliminate employment barriers for skilled immigrants and refugees, and integrate this population into the professional U.S. workforce.
Upwardly Global works with foreign-born job seekers by providing them with individualized coaching, essential soft skills, resume building, and professional networking opportunities. We help roughly 1,000 newcomers annually move out of poverty and marginalization and into professional roles that are commensurate with their talent and ambition and in which they earn a thriving starting salary of $57,000.

The mission of Granite Education Foundation is to improve educational outcomes by strengthening the Granite School District Community. This is accomplished through the engagement of business and community partners in the support of Granite School District and the academic achievement of all its students. Our Vision is that we will help prepare Granite District students with opportunities to succeed in higher education, career, and life.

This 3-day virtual hacking event - presented by Project Humanities at Arizona State University - challenges participants to create and to innovate solutions to local and global issues. While this year’s participant team tracks are Aging, Safety, and Justice, all finished products in this team competition must embody these Humanity 101 principles: kindness, compassion, integrity, respect, empathy, forgiveness, and self-reflection.

Black Connect is the only national membership 501(c)(3) that is dedicated solely to eliminating the racial wealth gap in America by increasing the number and success rate of Black-owned businesses. Our programs and our business and social network are created to enable entrepreneurial activities and promote the socioeconomic growth and empowerment of the Black Community.
- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: Support Black entrepreneurs as a mentor and judge in Black Connect's business pitch competition - FeverPitch. You'll help build, empower and boost Black Connect’s startup ecosystem by providing feedback on business plans and pitches, culminating in a live-streamed Shark-Tank-style event.
Founded in 2016, Basta is a nonprofit committed to closing the employment gap for first-generation college students of color. They do this by providing a rich curriculum and training to young people and partnering with a network of employers who are seeking innovative hiring solutions. To date, nearly 500 students have participated in their signature program, the Basta Fellowship, and have secured career-pathway jobs at companies like NBC Universal, Bloomberg LP, and Snapchat, to name a few.
The Knowledge House (TKH) is committed to taking low-income youth & young adults from the bottom up by providing them with free technical training and professional development services that put them on a direct path to employment in the tech sector.
- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: Engage with The Knowledge House students in a speed networking event. You'll provide 1:1 feedback on their elevator pitch and share career insights. Please note that the students participating in this event have an interest focus of software engineering, data science and full stack development.

- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: Help transcribe the card file index of the Boston Phoenix, helping people you discover and be inspired by the forgotten, missing, or lost parts of Boston's underground. For nearly 50 years, The Boston Phoenix was Boston’s alternative newspaper of record, the first word on social justice, politics, and the arts and music scene. Its intrepid journalists tackled issues from safe sex and AIDS awareness to gay rights, marriage equality, and the legalization of marijuana.

HEAF changes the lives of under-served young people beginning in middle school and continuing in college and beyond through a youth development approach that includes rigorous year-round academic enrichment, social and cultural exposure and constant individual attention.
- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: Provide words of inspiration to HEAF first-year college students, who are embarking on their college journey during this challenging time. Volunteers will write notes with advice/words of wisdom or create a motivational quote to be included in HEAF's student care packages. This year, HEAF will be sending care packages to students who are both on campus at colleges and universities across the country and also those who are at home, enrolled remotely. Each volunteer will write two inspirational notes in this group activity.
We help under-resourced entrepreneurs create thriving businesses in under-served areas so owners can build wealth for themselves, their families and communities. We do this by activating and engaging a top-tier network of professional volunteers who provide high-quality legal, financial and marketing services, at no cost.
VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES:
Brand Assessment Sessions: These are one-hour long consultations focused on helping an entrepreneur better position their product or service to attract customers during this difficult time. Volunteers will use worksheets (provided pre-event) to gather feedback for the entrepreneur on both their brand and overall messaging tactics as represented on social media and their website. The brand feedback will focus on its consistency, look and feel, as well as how the business can align the brand’s voice better given its target audience. This would be a good fit for volunteers who can provide more general business consulting, with a marketing focus.
Website Audit Session: This one-hour long consultation focuses on helping an entrepreneur better position their product or service to attract customers during this difficult time. Given that the majority of activity and sales are moving online, entrepreneurs need help ensuring their websites are user-friendly and appealing to their target audience. These projects are designed to provide feedback on the layout, functionality, visual design, content and other features to improve the overall website experience. This would be a good fit for volunteers with expertise in tech or UX/UI.
Sales Optimization Session: This one-hour long consultation focuses on helping an entrepreneur better position their product or service to attract customers during this difficult time. Many of our entrepreneurs’ existing business models may not be set up to function without in-person interactions. In order to generate sales and keep their businesses operating, they are now challenged with adapting and innovating their existing offering to meet current needs. These projects focus on identifying new sales and distribution channels to help entrepreneurs continue staying in business during and after this crisis.This would be a good fit for volunteers with expertise in sales.
We believe that through the process of creating collaborative art, diverse communities can come together in times of conflict and social turmoil to address the challenges they face together. Our projects are organized and facilitated in partnership with local artists, grass-roots organizations, schools, and international organizations to ensure we can support Artolution’s locally-led programs and long-term, integrated presence within the communities we serve.
By working in partnership, we support a global movement with endless possibilities.
- VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: South Sudanese refugees, who are currently teaching artists-in-training in Uganda, will practice leading virtual arts-based workshops with volunteers, focusing on collaborative storytelling and character development activities. Volunteers will support teaching artists-in-training by providing feedback, offering tools for how to engage audiences more effectively and build their self-confidence.
To ensure the safety and security of our global community of volunteers, most nonprofit volunteering opportunities this year are virtual .
The only exceptions to this are the two resident-only volunteer activation's hosted in Tempe, AZ and Salt Lake City, UT - which will be complying with all respective state-wide COVID-19 prevention policies, masks, social distancing and sanitation procedures.
YES! - Volunteers are able to register for 2 activities max (one regional activity and one universal) to help allow all volunteers a chance to secure a spot for at least one of their desired volunteer regional activities.
