Help promote and encourage a culture of literacy and learning across our local student community.
Belle Haven Elementary School is recognized as a model of public educational excellence across the Bay Area that prepares all students to succeed and contribute to a challenging and changing world. This year, they are focused on instilling 5 core values within their student and teacher communities: Respect, Compassion, Relationships, Cooperation, Responsibility.
Belle Haven is looking for volunteers to pick out a book in their personal library - that exhibits one or more of their core 5 values - and record themselves reading their book aloud, so that teachers at Belle Haven will be able to play these pre-recorded videos to their classes.

Build the historical baseline for plant diversity and distribution in Florida.
Natural history museums across the world share a common goal – to conserve and make available knowledge about natural and cultural heritage. The Notes from Nature Project gives you the opportunity to make a scientifically important contribution towards that goal. Every transcription that is completed brings us closer to filling gaps in our knowledge of global biodiversity and natural heritage.
WeDigFLPlants is a collaboration between professional research botanists, amateur naturalists, gardeners, educators, and citizen scientists to build the most complete picture possible of plant distribution and diversity in Florida over the past 200 years. Today, there are >4,700 species of plants native or naturalized in Florida. The data for this historical baseline comes from archived plant specimens curated by the world's 3,000 herbaria. Each of these specimens includes a label that answers the who, what, when, and where of the collecting event that produced it.
Volunteers will transcribe these physical plant specimen labels into digitally-accessible ones - unlocking unprecedented global research access to scientists, educators, natural resource managers, and policymakers addressing societal and environmental challenges, today and in the future.

Today, 25,000 seniors live alone in the city of San Francisco. Many are oftentimes homebound or physically & socially isolated with little to no means of building trust, friendship or community. It's our mission to change that!
For this activity, volunteers will create and decorate homemade cards and/or use store bought cards to mail to our older adults and elders to brighten their day and create an environment of compassion and companionship!
Volunteers may create as many cards as they like, and in any language they like! Many of our elders speak and/or read Chinese/Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish and Russian, so cards in these languages are highly encouraged, in addition to English.
All completed cards will be sent to our TGB team (more details to come), and will be distributed on a monthly basis, as well as for major holidays, such as Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly invite people from all generations and different walks of life to create reciprocal and meaningful relationships that provide valuable social interaction to older persons living in San Francisco. Designed specifically for interpersonal connectivity, LBFE's programs are committed to serving elderly over 65 years of age or disabled by offering unbiased services currently unavailable through public or government agencies, such as in consistent home social interaction and increased connectivity to the outside world. "Sik fa-an” ( 食飯 ) means “let’s eat!” in Cantonese. The Sik Faan Fund provides fresh, familiar and nutritious food and essential goods to local, low income, senior and food insecure community members through Manhattan Chinatown’s restaurant, grocery, market, and tea purveyor partners. This fund is inspired by the culinary richness of Chinatown and the cultural traditions of eating together and sharing a meal.
As part of our Sik Faan/ "Let's Eat" food donation & distribution program, volunteers will learn and write cards and messages in Chinese/Mandarin calligraphy to accompany these food deliveries to underserved community members and program recipients.
Volunteers will watch a short video of Chinese calligraphy, alongside an instructor, detailing how to write simple messages of encouragement on the cards, as well as have the opportunity to personalize and decorate - all to brighten up our meal recipients' day.
Welcome to Chinatown sources also partners with the Chinese American Planning Council and UA3 to help distribute the meals to those in need.
Welcome to Chinatown was founded in March 2020 as a grassroots initiative to support and amplify the voices of Manhattan Chinatown. By listening to the stories of the community, we learned how the COVID-19 pandemic combined with increased xenophobia, decreased foot traffic, and lack of advocacy resulted in tremendous hardship for many families who rely on this ethnic enclave. Our mission is to respond to the needs of the community by providing thoughtful resources and encouraging everyone to safely explore all of the wonderful sights, foods, history, and culture this beloved neighborhood has to offer as the world slowly begins to re-open. Kelp forests are under water areas with a high density of kelp, which covers a large part of the world's coastlines and contributes to the sustainability of most marine and oceanic species. They are recognized as one of the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on Earth, but they are in trouble.
Destructive fishing practices, coastal pollution, and accidental damage caused by boat entanglement are only some of the causes of kelp forest depletion.
For the Floating Forests Project, we are trying to understand how forests of kelp grow and change over time. Using satellite imagery from space - generously provided by NASA - volunteers will examine these images and help us locate these forests so we many continue ecological research and development, in efforts to maintain these essential ecosystems.
